Janet Jackson, la benjamine d'une fratrie de neuf enfants, fait ses débuts sur scène à l'âge de sept ans aux côtés des Jackson Five. Après quelques apparitions dans des séries télévisées, elle se lance dans une carrière musicale, mais ses deux premiers albums ne rencontrent pas le succès escompté. Avec l'aide d'un nouveau manager, John MacCain, elle sort l'album « Control », qui connaît un succès fulgurant, suivi par « Rhythm Nation 1814 », propulsant plusieurs de ses titres dans le top 5 des charts, un exploit que son frère Michael n'a jamais réalisé.
Après avoir signé avec Virgin, Janet enchaîne les succès avec des titres comme « The Best Things in Life Are Free » et publie l'album « Janet », qui se vend à 7 millions d'exemplaires. En 1995, elle collabore avec son frère sur le morceau « Scream ». Bien que son album suivant, « Velvet Rope », soit moins bien reçu, elle continue sa carrière avec « Damita Jo » en 2004. Cependant, un incident marquant survient lors de la promotion de cet album : lors d'une performance avec Justin Timberlake, un accident vestimentaire expose son sein droit et provoque une onde de choc au sein du public américain. Janet est contrainte de présenter des excuses publiques.
